ByGrace children’s home was started in Feb 2005. It was started by Stephen and Rosemary Mbogo who were serving in one of the slums of Nairobi (Mathare North), as a response to cater for the growing number of destitute children catalyzed by the HIV/AIDs pandemic; in Kenya we currently have 1.6 Million HIV/AIDs orphans.
Their experience in the slum gave them real life experiences on the devastation of HIV and particularly the destitute state of children-led families, orphans under the care of aged and jobless grandmothers, and orphans under the care of families in abject poverty (those living under US$1 per day).
Departing from the traditional way of supporting orphans, characterized by giving minimal survival support, that usually augments the poverty cycle, the home was established to provide quality support to destitute/vulnerable children (a healthy diet, quality education, lovely home and surrounding environment away from the slums. |
